Prius - Chicago to New York on a single tank Wayne's Progress

Let's see,

578 mi / 71.4 mpg is 8.1 gallons. Plus 2.6 is 10.7 . Sounds about right for a 45 degree Fahrenheit fillup.

Its going to be very very close.

 

I calculate that he has ~212 miles left to go. I routinely go 100 miles or more on the flashing pip alone. I think he's got it.

Have not said much because of work, but have been tracking this.

Guess it all depends on how much the bladder held.

 

This is going to be a real nail biter. I just got off the phone with Wayne. He has gone 692 total miles. He has 103 miles to go and 1 PIP showing just turned to one PIP and not flashing.

MFG 70.5 MPG SG 71.2 MPG

What does everyone think is he going to make it.

Different Prius have different flashing pip characteristics. Some will go 100 miles, others 2 .

692 - 578 = 114, or 57 miles per pip. 578/71.4 = 8.095 ga. 692/70.5 = 9.816 ga. (9.816 - 8.095)/2 = .861 ga / pip . 103/.861 = 119.6 mpg required to finish. He can only do it with a 40/25 mph pulse and glide to the finish. Unless the last pip has more gas.

I think Wayne is mentally calculating this one out...692 miles on 9.9 gallons or less....if he has 1.4 gallons left - he's made it.

 

I think any of us that know him can hear these words: 'Trust me on this...'

I edited in some additional stuff into that post. The final 3rd and 2nd pips are pretty consistent, but different than the average. I have never tested the 1st pip. But from PriusChat owners comments, its all over the place.

He got 57 miles per pip. And the other math shows 66.2 mpg on the last two pips. Hopefully he can find a slow and go route the rest of the way.

 

Why would Wayne be pushing on the right-side - this is not England.

Anyone that remembers the Top Gear episode, this beats Jermy's Edinburgh to London trip in a diesel Audi, and he did not do badly.
