When I talked to Wayne, he said he actually got going at 7:15. I initialy though it was 5:00, but I guess that is when they met up. I think he said he has averaging about 50 MPH, but I am not sure of that.

Jud, he mentioned 50mph to me as well, for a little while he was going a bit faster, but dropped back to 50-ish. Last I talked to him, Benno was behind him, Wayne thinks he forgot something and went back to get it.

Cool. That gives me a bit of a comparison with my trip to Cincinnati last weekend. Unless the winds do a weird 180* shift it's looking good.:flag:

I checked the wind forecast as far as PA and it should be a rear quarter tail wind at 10 knots, all the way to PA.

then he encounters mountains. rain and probable headwinds.:eek::eek:

Since he has Scangauges set up, he would be able to report the average mpg.

Wayne just called. He is past Toledo at mile marker 74 in ohio on I-80. That is 245 miles total. Here are his readings: SG 72.8 MPG MFD 71.6 MPG.

Larry, he dropped the first PIP at 206 miles. Based on your experience how does that look?

That looks great! I think on my last near-record tank of 86.7mpg that the first pip fell somewhere around the 260 mile mark. I'm going to estimate that he has 630+or- miles left in the tank which means he should have more than enough. The spoiler could be the possibility that the bladder was a bit on the new side and wasn't as flexible as mine was when I got 12.1 gallons in after 1056+ miles without running out.

Looks like we should go for the Hamptons. :)

Hopefully he'll take the GWB instead of the Lincoln or Holland, as that allows for a nice CBS copter flyover :)

Y'all can be nervous. I'm already celebrating.

I keep wondering what those moron British BMW & Prius London-to-Geneva drivers must be thinking after getting 41mpg and potentially reading about Chicago-to-New York. ha.

Fingers crossed for Wayne's impressing the whole nation (well, at least the early risers!). This is something I will even wake up early to watch, tomorrow! :¬)

2:40 PM update Wayne is at mile marker 134 which is about 300 miles from the start. He is at: Sg 73.5 MPG MFD 72.2 MPG He is just down 1 PIP from full.

The reporter for CBS is Benno Schmidt. He passed Wayne at mile marker 124 which was 290 miles into the trip. At that time Benno had just 3 PIPS left and was averaging about 45 MPG. He will have to stop for gas in about 100 miles. Also, Wayne said to pass that Benno has been playing with the MFD and accidently reset the consumption screen on the MFD some ways back.

See new map in first post.

Let's hope Benno remembers to record his tank fills and to fill as close to destination as possible so we can calculate fuels usage and mileage. Does anyone know if they recorded the odos before leaving?

Since they put a seal on Wayne's tank, I am sure they something figured out for this.

    :D way to go, reporter.

so, if wayne still has gas left when he gets there, does he have to keep going? LOL.

are they going to measure what's left, or do a fill to check mileage?

Be sure to let Wayne know of the record visitors today as well!
That should be motivating for him.
And I'm predicting that after the show tomorrow we will hit a new record again.

I'll be interested to see how many people want to take Wayne and the rest of the hypermiliers on at the Hybridfest MPG Challenge this year. And the speakers in the hypermiling sessions will definitely have to use this event as a reference point.

For effect, Wayne should pickup the reporter after he fills up for the second time and give him a lift into NYC.

    Carpooling should be encouraged too!

Great job getting the message out Wayne :)

Go Wayne Go! I do have a question though: Is Wayne planning any pit stops (ie. washroom breaks, lunch, snack, driver switch, etc.)? :woot:

I thought people only took pit stops when you stopped for gas... and in this case.. no need to stop for gas. :)
