Wayne started out this morning from Chicago. He is taking one Prius and a reporter from CBS is taking another Prius. Wayne is hypermiling and the reporter is driving "normal".

This map will document Wayne's course for everybody to follow. I will update periodically with Wayne's Progress.

Re: Prius New York on a single tank Waynes Progress

I talked to Wayne at 9:15. He was at 84.5 MPG. He had just crossed the [edit: Illinois/Indiana]. The terrain starts to climb here and he is starting to see a decrease in total MPG. I will keep you posted.

Hope you don't mind. I'm adding a terrain elevation map. The real uphill won't start until Wayne is about half way through Ohio.

Does anyone have the total miles he has to travel from where he started?

Google says Chicago to New York is 790. Exactly from what point to what point I don't know.

Great. In that case, he is right on target! My calculations show at least 833 miles at his current rate of consumption assuming the standard 11.9 gallon capacity. With the over-fill he's got a good cushion to work with.

well, we have to figure that no matter what wayne does, it's going to be a lot better than the reporter...........

Here is what Wayne is facing terrain wise over the next 100 miles. I made these terrain profiles for each 100 mile segments for his trip. He has them with him.

I didn't notice it but, is he using a Scanguage for the mpg numbers or is he just using the FCD?

There have been the occassional PriusChat post from time to time about how it is possible to squeeze 12.0, 12.2, or even 12.5 gallons into that 11.9 bladder. I don't know how accurate as I've never tried, but even if you only squeezed in 12.2..............65mpg is all you'd need.

And who thinks Wayne is gonna fall to 65mpg? Uh, not I. :)

I hope he can keep it above 70 for dramatic effect.

Does anybody else feel like the world is looking more and more like the Poseidon Adventure? You know, the hypermilers climbing up to the bottom of the boat while the masses in the gallery first criticize but later scream for help as the water caves in below?

    Go, Wayne Go!

Yeah, that's going to be the fun part; To see how much more MPG will Wayne get than Benno Schmidt.

Hopefully the difference in the elapsed time won't be very large, though. Otherwise that will be fuel for the nay-sayers.

I have another question or two: Does anyone have the time they left Chicago and what is his average mph if it's being tracked?
