Here is the elevation profile for the last segment.
What is the tank record distance for a Prius on the freeway?
He is going to make it exit 43 for sure, and the rest will be sheer luck.
It looks like Wayne's phone may be dead. Sean said on his last phone conversation he had 95 miles to go and 2 PIPs. This is a more accurate reading as to distance remaining then the one I had, so I think he will be OK.
The change may be due to going down hill now. Fuel has sloshed forward.
Just got off the phone with Wayne. He had his cell turned off to save the battery. He is pulling off the freeway now and hooking up with the news crew to film his arrival into New York. Where he is at he can see the skyline of New York.
The numbers are:
SG 71.3 MFD 70.8
I talked to him as well -- said he still has 2 pips left!
I told him he should ask those guys if he should go back and pick up the other guy?
WOW with 2 PIPs, he should try to come all the way back.
ok, so i got carried away. this is so awesome, we are on the map, guys....
Watching from the other side of the world here. I missed the memo that all this was going to happen!
Thanks for the profile maps, bestmapman, but c'mon, stretch out the vertical axis.
Would like to know what the wind and rain conditions were, through the worst.
Need more updates! Has the other Prius made a 2nd fuel stop?
Cheers and a cup of Virtual Coffee to Wayne.
Great updates and news. With all that excess fuel, now is the time to floor it and finish first! I know that violates the hypermiling spirit, but the cameras are rolling...
Better yet, how about some Donuts at the finish line, Go NASCAR for a minute
Hope somebody is collecting video coverage. Pretty sure this will not be on CCTV tonight.
Way to go Wayne, sorry I couldn't cheer you on throughout the thread. Crazy day at work, just got online recently. This is going to be a fantastic segment.
My parting advice last I spoke with him was to pack shoes. My showings at Hybridfest mentioned in the previous posts was actually a very refined and tuned technique. I call it BMA or BioMechanicalAssit. BMA on that particular occasion netted me a 0.95% boost in MPG. Some choose to call it by the less technical term... pushing.
I text messaged his cell while I was in a meeting today... Here was the exchange:
Dan->Wayne: "Hows it going? How's the Prius? Any status updates?"
Wayne->Dan: "Battery Died!"
Dan->Self: "WTF, how did Wayne manage to toast a Prius battery in 700 miles!?!?!"
The unintended brevity of text messaging left out the word "cell" in "Battery Died!" .
To the others requesting info on technique, look at the [post="6624"]"Stealth-Warp" thread[/post], and the [post="43937"]"Super Highway Mode (SHM)" thread[/post].
Way to go Wayne, and... when does it air?
That was one nice report on the video you posted, especially the reporter's surprise how well she was able to do with only one lesson.
So where is the reporter who was driving the other Prius? Was he allowed to drive as fast as he wanted, and buy as much fuel as he needed?
What a neat thing to arrange. Great idea, and wonderful results. Congrats to Wayne and everyone who assisted.
Anyone have an update?
Wayne, congrats on the effort. A lot of us have been silently cheering in the background (as evidenced by the 2,800 thread views before this thread is even a day old)!
Wayne - another thought.... you should give the CBS reporter the extra $40-$50 you didnt spend on a tank of gas that the reporter did.
You could also ask for a $0.50/mile mileage reimbursement and have the reporter give you $400 - pocketing $350
I see from the video, Wayne made it OK and still has his sense of humor.

Absolutely amazing media coverage. Over nine minutes total between the two of positive national media.
Congrats to Wayne and CleanMPG.com! Looks like there is a definite spike in the number of people checking out the website. Most users ever online 996!
Congratulations to Wayne again! :woot:
Love that quote, Wayne: "Lets take a ride, we might make it back to Chicago."
