    Hi All:

I have a RAV4 Hybrid scheduled for a week while I am in the Chicago area between the 7th and 14th of November. I cannot wait to knock out a steady state on that one!

We have driven the RAV4 Hybrid on short stints at the rodeo, the first drive in Big Sur, and at the most recent Toyota Hybrid, PHEV, and BEV announcement junket a few weeks ago but not with the efficiency details. It is going to be cold and usually windy in Chicago making for an interesting change vs this Southern California sunshine and temperate climate. Fires up north notwithstanding.

I'm quite curious to see the steady states. I'm expecting a big drop off above 65 mph.

    Hi Carcus:

I am as well. The RAV4 Hybrid is a brick by comparison to the Camry Hybrid for sure.

    Hi All:

    2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

    41/38/40 mpg city/highway/combined first measured drive…

Starting SoC from the Shell just outside of MKE in Milwaukee at 4-bars, finish SoC at 4-bars at a Shell in Zion, IL. 41.5 miles on .915 gallons = 45.4 mpg vs 46.1 mpg displayed or a .984 * displayed offset.

First cold weather impressions? In temps below freezing, the slightly modified – read higher 219 hp net vs 208 Camry Hybrid drivetrain just did not want to provide. That increased hp output spec could be related to the 40 kW motor out back making the RAV4 Hybrid an AWD.

Below freezing and you just do not see that instantaneous pegged except under very short range EV from low speed starts or regen coming down. Above freezing, it will peg at 60 at 50+ mph on and off again and again.

In addition, the aFCD resets after each full shutdown and reboot. I have to get into the menus and clean that up if possible.

The Qi wireless charger now works for the Samsung Galaxy Note8 – it is large enough – so it will work for all phones. Great to see that Toyota! However, it still is a hit or miss charging solution.

Ergo for taller drivers is still not entirely right. Thankfully the 8-way power driver seat can bring in some lower thigh support to make up for the short seat bottoms.

The power liftgate for my mom’s purposes is a godsend and can be so equipped on the XLE with the Convenience pkg so that works as well.

Regarding Toyota's first attempt at rear view mirror camera, it is fine during the day but at night, it is terrible.

In any case, the 2019 does not have the upgraded Android Auto so I will catch that on the next one.

I am just hours away from heading out to complete the steady states despite temps in the low 40s and falling. It has been a while. ;)

    Hi All:

I have the speed vs FE data and will put together the speed vs FE graphs in the morning. I am plenty pleased with the results with a higher than 70 mph EPA highway crossover.

    Hi All:

Here is the 41/38 mpg city/highway rated 2019 Toyota RAV4 HEV in Limited Trim Speed vs FE graph.

Temps ranged from 41 to 43 degrees F with light 3 to 5 mph winds out of the west during the straight north/south runs. The resultant aFCD reading was taken at the same elevation as the reset over the 8-mile measured route in each direction, averaged, and the 0.984 aFCD offset applied. I did not temperature compensate to 70 degrees but if I did, you can add 7.5 percent (.0025/degree F) to each result.

Speedometer offsets were consistent from 50 to 70 mph with the speedometer showing 1 mph under actual GPS speed.

The EPA highway of 38 mpg speed crossover occurs at a straight line calc of a superlative 76.3 mpg. That is impressive for a CUV.

    Hi All:

Apparently the RAV4 Hybrid is not just a U.S. sales standout!

Toyota Canada achieved another electrified vehicle sales record with 3,498 vehicles sold, up 56% in October compared to the same period last year.

Led by sales of the made-in-Canada RAV4, year-to-date sales of hybrids (30,118 vehicles sold, up 49%) continues its strong push in October led by the RAV4 hybrid (1,574 vehicles sold, up 95.5%) and Prius Prime PHEV (918 vehicles sold, up 368.4%).

RAV4 hybrid sales of 1,574 vehicles accounted for 24.8 percent of the 6,348 RAV4s sold to our neighbors to the North.

A poster at Priuschat also reports they are a big hit in Australia, accounting for about half of Rav4 sales.

    Hi All:

While in Northeastern Illinois for the next week and a half and the RAV4 Hybrid being an AWD vehicle, I experienced a little snow driving this morning. The std. all-electric - no prop shaft - AWD system does provide better acceleration on snow covered roads. The 54 hp and 89 lb.-ft. torque rear motor provides launch traction on snow or dry surfaces exactly as advertised.

And yes, that is a TPMS light. When temps drop below freezing, the tire pressures are low enough to trigger it. Unfortunately the RAV4 Hybrids TPMS system does not indicate individual tire pressures. A cheap way out given its competitors provide tire pressures at each wheel.

    Hi All:

And where the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid fails in some regard...

In Limited trim, the RAV4 Hybrid can be equipped with an all-new Digital Rearview Mirror. This system is a camera on the back hatch that looks rearward, sends the video to the rearview and can take the place of the rearview mirror with headrests, people, seats, C/D-pillars, and the hatch itself.

Std. Rearview mirror with snow accumulating on the rear window.

    Digital Rearview Mirror

While driving in light snowfall, the just cleaned rear hatch glass and camera were covered to no view out of the digital camera mirror within about .25 miles. The std. rearview - accessible by moving the dim and std. view lever - just needed the rear wiper to be cycled and it cleaned right up.

    Hi All:

I also wanted to mention my experience with the Predictive State of Charge (SOC) algorithm.

    2019 Toyota RAV4 HEV AWD

    SoC Indication.

While completing the steady states the other night, the 50 and 55 mph runs were completed with a solid 5-bar SoC start to finish in both directions. The 60 and 65 mph runs were completed with 4-bars of SoC from start to finish in both directions. The 70 mph runs were completed with just 3-bars SoC at the beginning and end of each segment out and back. I did nothing to adjust this but the RAV4 HEV was predicting that a slowdown or stop from 65 and 70 mph was going to provide a significant SoC build through Regen that the slower speeds would not. The 50 mph segments with 5-bars showing must have predicted more of a city/suburban roadways with less regen energy available and more EV use coming up so moved the SoC up prior to any slowdown.

I thought it was pretty slick although it was not an AI based solution that I could tell.

I still cannot find a driver display aFCD reset. I had to bring up the central 8” display Trip Information and reset it for each N-S steady state segments the other night to complete the Speed vs FE graphs.

    Hi Bill:
Yes! GM is moving into their 2nd or 3rd generation digital rearview mirror and have placed the camera in a location that the lens receives far less dirt and debris from the airflow eddys than the Toyota system.

At night, the Toyota digital rear view camera video is very very grainy vs headlamps from 1/2 a mile back in the mirror where you can actually see are a pair of headlamps.

I am also not a fan of the camera/video during the day either. It has a slow movement that is not present in the mirror and gives me a slight headache from I assume inducing motion sickness. I am susceptible to that. :(

The rearview video mirror is something I've always wanted and have it in a cheap aftermarket way. The only problem is I did not attach the exterior camera well (read I double sided taped it on) and it fell off. Now it just sits in the 'trunk' of my Bolt, still wired up. The other bad part was the video processor in the mirror was not able to handle both video streams well so there were regular dropouts in the recorded video. Just the front camera remains and that's my dash cam. I like the remaining part though.

edit: With your susceptibility to motion sickness, I'm surprise you're able to do all that you do in the car. I get motion sickness, too, that's why my wife lets me drive when we're out together. She's able to text and watch videos while I'm driving. I would quickly have to stick my head out the window if I were to do similar things.

With digital displays, I don't get the thinking for why not to have all four wheel pressures shown on some screen.
Got a 2016 Camry SE, and it has a four wheel display on the selectable driver's screen, but the other trims do not.

    Hi Trollbait:

Yes, I thought the same thing. Here I am in a loaded $40,849 (incl the $1,120 D&H charge) 2019 RAV4 Hybrid Limited and I do not have individual tire pressure sensor readouts? I did not take a pressure gauge to any of the tires but only looked to see that they "look" inflated. I would know which tire and the individual tire pressure readouts if this was included. :(

I just posted a warning readout from the very low cost 18 Elantra Eco that not only had each tire pressure displayed but even details on which lamps had burned out. If you burned out a front lamp, it showed and both told you in the display if it was right or left and if it was low or high beam.

You need to fly one of their engineers up to Chicago and let one of them get out of the vehicle in 10 degree temps with the wind howling and sit there with a tire gauge and have to futz with all 4 tires to figure out which one needs air.

I still need a tire gauge in the car as the display reads 2 to 5 psi higher than my two dial ones.
