I hope so too. I got rear-ended in my '65 Mustang (no headrests then) by a big honking Pontiac in 1975. Felt fine at the time, but just finished 3 months of physical therapy for degenerative cervical joint disease. Their first question to me was, "Were you ever rear-ended in an accident?" :eyebrow: It helped the numbness in my hands some for a while, but am probably looking at surgery some time in the future. Please make sure everything is OK Mrs. G. - if it still hurts get treatment NOW.
Heartbreaking and absolutely unbelievable. I hate rear-endings of any kind particularly any that cause significant damage- I should know since I've had a couple myself with a write-off to talk about. I just hope Wayne and Mrs are doing OK. From the looks of it the car can be repaired OK but that is one detriment in the vehicle's history that only lowers the value. Maybe Honda can recoup this loss through the other person's insurance. Still, its times like these that I wish mandatory road examinations every five years on license renewal were the norm. Then again, these rear endings might still happen anyway. Cheers; MSantos
Can anyone elaboriate how the HCHII is undrivable? The picture does not suggest it's that bad, but it probably does not show the entire damage.
This is just terrible. I simply cannot believe the amount of rear endings and jerk driving incidents that I've read about in recent weeks. I'm afraid to post my vote in the poll as I really don't want to jinx myself.
The car is still drivable by Wayne's account -- only one of the bulbs in the back is inoperative -- but the trunk can't be opened.
O wow, this is terrible! I hope you guys are both ok and no ill effects later on! See, this is why those things should be limited! We have these huge beasts on the road, some with less than competent drivers. They all talk about "oh these are much safer!" Yeah well you wouldnt need ten tons of steel to help you avoid getting hurt if you werent such an idiot!! Can anyone tell I'm not happy about this???.. How are you going 30mph in 5-10mph stop and crawl?? It's really disgusting, it's as bad as any other crime out there. btw, havent been rear-ended before, but if it ever happens, the driver of the other car better make great their escape because once I call the police and the insurance and my lawyer, their grandchildren are gonna need bail!
I don't know the whole story, but I'd venture that this distracted driver was in a trance, then realized: "Gridlock!". By then, the damage was done.
Apparently the other driver has a history of poor driving and even had one outstanding ticket. There was no excuse for this but now Wayne probably won't be able to get any more review vehicles from Honda.
I'm concerned about that too. I can speak for my own driving record this decade. I've had five collisions (none hypermiling related). They other guy always got the ticket, but I know that if I drove as alertly then as I do now only 1-2 of those 5 collisons would have happened.
I've rear-ended 2 people, sadly, prior to my hypermiling days (30 and 18 years ago). Both on black ice. I was not ticketed in either. They were both sub 5 mph crashes. My reaction: I probably was too aggressive (though not very aggressive) with my following distances, and there are certain times when one shouldn't drive without proper equipment (chains).
Been rear ended three times. Twice when I was at a dead stop. The worst was when I had been sitting still for well over a solid minute. The light behind me changed and the first three cars through the light in their aggressive fashion switched lanes all cutting in front of the cars in the other lane, the fourth car being just as aggressive didn't make it. He claimed he was distracted.
I hope they are doing OK. Glad to see the car is still drivable. The worst accident I've ever been in was when I was coming to a stop on wet pavement on a steep down grade and hit the brakes tires locked up and being too young to know better just kept my foot on the brake. I hit the car in front of me at less than 10 MPH (just a guess). No damage to my car. His car had a cracked bumper. I was hoping that b/c it was minor damage and as I had no insurance, that he would just let it go since no one was hurt...... It was then that he flashed his badge. He was an off-duty officer in his personal car.
I too hope Honda realize that sh* happens and seeing as how Wayne wasn't at fault they just make it an inside joke. "Alright Wayne, here's the HCHIII, please bring it back in one piece with all the panels in the condition they're in now . Now go win us another record!" Wayne if you see this, how's Mrs. Gerdes & Mom?
