This morning was bad. Nasty hard frost that withstood my scraper, so I ran the car with defrost on for a few minutes. :(

    End result: 34.2 mpg / 11.7 mi.

Tank is way down to 46.6 / 116 mi.

We had 2' of snow a week ago, then just recently a couple days of rain and 50 degF and now back to below freezing and several surprise inches of snow overnight. I have to get the snow off the solar panels. Hard work but now that the waist deep drifts are gone, just annoying. Sometimes the temperatures are right and the snow comes right off. Other times, there's a crusty glaze on which the snow sits and takes arm strength to put it down. I have a bad feeling about the current conditions. :(:)

Ugh. 47.5 home, 42.9 this morning with frost. Tank is down again, to 46.4 / 11.5.

A short timeline to frame my frustration:
I had my old Civic and an ideal commute, 80 mpg.
    Bought the Fit. 70 mpg.
Moved closer to town. 60 mpg.
Started driving kids around. 50 mpg.
    Now: ?? 40's mpg.

The healthy, good-sized elk herd upstream from the town of Snoqualmie & near North Bend, WA. have majestic bulls & the herd goes where it wants on the plateau & below the 2000+ foot cliffs of Mount Si(Twin Peaks in the TV show, Twin Peaks). Some times they are in the fields southeast of several schools & large groups of cars park to observe them. I've seen elk crossing some of the branches of the Snoqualmie River. Now downstream from Snoqualmie & Snoqualmie Falls, in the bottomland, is another smaller herd (again with magnificent bulls) & they travel where they will. Other elk herds range the bottomlands & other flatlands in WA.

Last month, when the cold hit the U.S., many inches of snow were predicted... even feet. However, one Native Tribal land got nailed with 4 feet of snow. As is presently the case, & the cases of last month, average far north Arctic temperatures over nearly 4 million square miles, are & have been, 5+degC to 10+degC, over average far north temperatures. These examples, indicate that AGW warm fronts are strongly pushing into the far north arctic regions, with enough power to force cold Arctic temperature fronts, that have plummeted due to months of continuous darkness, far to the south.

I feel your pain Andrew :(

No driving for me so far this week - car pooling. Am I glad! Big accident on motorway this morning meant a big detour and an extra 15 minutes....

When I car pooled to University in the early 70's, all four carpoolers were dutiful & most often we had four people in our owned vehicles. During the late 90's into the 2000's, some employees at my wife's job, began commuting "together". For some reason, they thought it worthy to pay extra money to use a regional commuter van (which wasn't cheap), instead of using their own vehicles. From the beginning, people weren't considerate & the van often was waiting during pickups. Also, people, with too much money, got the "bright" idea to stop at convenience stores during the commute, which made everybody wait. Then, people started making too many excuses to use their own vehicles. Sometimes the costly van only carried two or three people, which could have been mitigated by using their own vehicles as commuting transportation. All in all, the under-utilized expensive van, finally got to people & the carpooling came to an end.

What is it with present-day Americans, with ideas to save money, then throwing it away with "ideas", excuses & no desire to adhere to schedules? Just no comradery?

Sounds like some of you can use some sort of windshield cover to reduce the frost burden. I brought one with me to Myrtle Beach in November. This one was laminated - shiny on one side and black on the other. I used it once to keep the sun out while I was charging at an outlet mall while my wife shopped. :D

I have a tarp for a windshield cover, but haven't been motivated to get it out yet.

I'm in the big van, going to borrow a trailer later. 12 mpg to work. :(

Saturday afternoon decided to do an early fill to take advantage of a 50¢/gallUS coupon that was expiring, 39°F:
    35.6 / 2.0

    Tank Stats

    Miles on tank: 399.4
GallsUS: 9.25. Put another 1.6 gallons in a can to stick in wife's Hyundai (another 78¢ saved!)
    Calc. MPG : 43.2 MPG
Calc. Range: 187.3 miles (allowing for extra in tank)
FCD Range: 205 (weird - higher than the calculated - probably squeezed extra in and the short fill is exaggerting it!)
    FCD MPG : 45.5 MPG (5.25% over-report)
    UG MPG : 45.4 MPG (5.15% over-report)
    No. of trips: 25
    Average trip length: 16.0
    Average speed 26mph
Driving time on tank: 15hrs 10mins
    Days since last fill: 25
    Commuting: 95%
    Ave. Temperature: 42.2°F
Ave. no. of people in car: 1.7
    Pmpg for the tank: 73.4

Average 5.25% FCD over-report - I'll adjust the indicated numbers down by that for new tank.

Gas station to home, 2UP, 40°F
    41.4 / 2.0

    Monday morning, 2UP, 39°F, cross/headwind SSW8:
    43.4 / 22.6

    New tank range 550 . Guess gauge F««««|««««E . UG at 47.4 / DTE 616

Temperatures in the nearly 4million square kilometer high Arctic still hang 5degC above average. These warm fronts moving into the high Arctic, continue to push cold Arctic fronts (due to 2 months of constant darkness) into lower latitudes, freezing Canada & the U.S.
It could be worse, as Wayne reports elsewhere: Australia is being roasted by heat. Highs of over 50C (122degF) are expected, with meteorologists warning the heat could break the country’s existing record of 50.7C (123+degF) measured at Oodnadatta, South Australia, in 1960.
