Living in a hilly area, and frequently crossing the southern Appalachians, I put my Prius's engine through a lot of such temperature fluctuations, and even wider ones (because my "glides" are often longer). However, I worry about what that might do to it's long-term health, especially after reading of so many head-gasket failures of high-mileage Prii.

Yesterday, 80.1 mpg indicated (about 76.5 actual) returning ~16 miles from a local bike ride. A week earlier, 84 indicated mpg on that route, except that I didn't zero the trip meter until after the first two miles, so the engine was pre-warmed that time. That was a record for me (previous being about 70 actual on a partially different route between the same points).

Very nice numbers , RedylC94. We never dreamed of getting this with our GLC's , did we ?
    Today , 42 deg F , wind N4. 15.4 miles , 71.05 MPG(76.4 fcd). Tank is at 136.9 miles , 63.98 (68.8 fcd).
Yesterday took a bike ride after work. Exactly 60 min , 13.3 miles.

That's true, but if I'd had a way of measuring fuel consumption during a single trip like that in the GLC, and had tried as hard, with as much low-speed engine-off coasting, it probably could've easily exceeded 60 mpg. The best it ever did on whole fill-ups (inevitably including a few bad sections) was about 53 mpg several times, I think. My equivalent best whole tanks for the Prius have been about 9 or 10 more.
